We traveled from Gent to Brussels by train. The central train station is two blocks from this square, called the La Grand-Place. It has been called 'the most beautiful square in the world', and who am I to argue.

The buildings date from the late 17th century and many were built originally as guild houses.

It still serves as a market place.

I believe this building houses one of the best restaurants in the area. We didn't try it, but the guide book said the upper floors make a great place to eat and observe.

This is the facade of one of the guild houses, the Haberdashers' Guild house.
