St. Marks Basilica

The church of San Marco is in the square. It is not tall and towering as are some of the bigger churches in Rome and Florence, but it is very ornate. It is built in the Byzantine style and is so old (1050) that the architect is unknown.

We went inside but I was not allowed to take pictures. The floor is laid with mosaic, and in many places you can see the waves in the floor where it has bucked over the years.

The Doges Palace is on the right

A night shot. Notice that the number of people in the square is much smaller at night.
